The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to the Federal Government to promptly address the economic challenges facing the country and alleviate the suffering of its citizens. Daniel Okoh, the association’s President, conveyed this message to Christians on the occasion of this year’s Ash Wednesday, marking the commencement of the Lenten season—a 40-day period of fasting and reflection in the Christian calendar.
In his message, Okoh expressed concern for the plight of individuals grappling with financial insecurity and limited access to essential resources. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable members of society and urged leaders to take tangible steps towards providing assistance.
“As we embark on this Lenten journey, our hearts are drawn to the plight of many who struggle to make ends meet, facing financial uncertainty and limited access to basic needs,” Okoh stated. “We long for a Nigeria where every individual is afforded the opportunity to thrive, and where our leaders prioritize the well-being of the most vulnerable in our society.”
Okoh urged Christians to extend support to those in need and collaborate with leaders in addressing economic hardships. He emphasized the importance of solidarity and compassion in creating a more inclusive society where marginalized voices are heard, and burdens are alleviated.
“It is a period for us to extend a helping hand to those in need and advocate for continuing support from our leaders in alleviating the burdens of our fellow citizens,” Okoh added, urging Christians to actively seek ways to contribute to the welfare of others during the Lenten season.
