Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has broken his silence following concerns raised by a top Nigerian football official regarding his safety. The 27-year-old, who garnered attention for his stellar performance during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament, has addressed the remarks while also facing speculation about his future in the sport.
Former Caf Appeal Committee vice president Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam cautioned Nwabali against returning to Chippa United, suggesting that his life could be in jeopardy due to his instrumental role in Nigeria’s victory over South Africa in the Afcon tournament. However, Nwabali has responded to these concerns, asserting his intention to rejoin the Chilli Boys.
In a statement reported by KickOff and BluePrint, Nwabali expressed his commitment to his club, emphasizing that threats are an unfortunate aspect of football. He stated, “You can’t threaten someone because they also won some other teams too… It’s football, I don’t think there’s anything attached to it.”
Despite the reassurance from his club’s chairman, questions linger regarding Nwabali’s future at Chippa United. His standout performances at the Afcon tournament have attracted attention from both local and international clubs, with initial links to Kaizer Chiefs giving way to potential interest from European sides, including Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise.
Nwabali’s agent, Mohammed Lawal, has confirmed reports of interest from clubs in France and Saudi Arabia, underscoring the goalkeeper’s burgeoning reputation on the global stage. However, amidst the transfer speculation, Nwabali’s immediate focus remains on his obligations with Chippa United as they prepare to resume their Premier Soccer League campaign against Cape Town City.
