Chinese National Sentenced to Death for Nigerian Girlfriend’s Murder in Kano

In a solemn ruling, a High Court in Kano delivered a verdict of death by hanging for 47-year-old Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, who fatally stabbed his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, aged 22. The tragic incident, which occurred in the Kano Railway quarters, led to Geng-Quangrong’s conviction on a charge of culpable homicide.

Presiding over the case, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji underscored the prosecution’s compelling case, affirming that the evidence presented left no doubt as to the defendant’s guilt. Justice Ado-Ma’aji remarked, “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.”

According to the prosecution counsel, Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, the heinous crime transpired on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano. Dederi detailed the fatal encounter, stating that Geng-Quangrong fatally stabbed Sani in her residence, resulting in her immediate demise upon arrival at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution meticulously presented its case, including testimony from six witnesses and the submission of four exhibits. The defence, represented by Muhummad Dan’azumi, sought clemency for the defendant under Section 313 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL).

In a poignant plea for mercy, Geng-Quangrong maintained that he acted in self-defense, recounting how the altercation with Sani escalated. He implored the court to consider mitigating circumstances in its judgment.

Following the verdict, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, the victim’s mother, expressed relief at the court’s decision.
