According to reports from The Telegraph, Chelsea are contemplating a summer transfer move for Athletic Bilbao’s emerging star, Nico Williams. The 21-year-old winger has caught the attention of the Premier League giants, who are considering activating his release clause, which stands at approximately £43 million.
Williams, known for his dynamic style of play and attacking prowess, has been in impressive form for Athletic Bilbao, contributing six goals and 11 assists so far this season. However, his potential move to Chelsea may come with financial considerations, as it is believed that he currently earns a substantial weekly wage in Spain, making him one of the top earners at the club.
While Chelsea’s primary focus may be on acquiring a striker, with targets like Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko on their radar, Williams’ versatility and performance have not gone unnoticed by the Blues. Nonetheless, his potential arrival could raise questions about the futures of current wingers Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk, with the club possibly needing to adhere to profit and sustainability rules, necessitating player sales to facilitate new signings.
Despite the interest from Chelsea, Williams remains under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027 and has already earned international recognition, having made 11 appearances for Spain and scoring two goals in the process. Aside from Chelsea, Arsenal is also rumored to be monitoring the talented youngster, who has been a part of Athletic Bilbao’s setup since 2013.
