Celtic Struggle as Real Madrid Secure Dominant 4-0 Victory in Women’s Champions League

Celtic’s spirited effort was ultimately overpowered by Real Madrid, who claimed their first Women’s Champions League points of the season with a 4-0 win. Scotland international Caroline Weir, making her return from a knee injury, opened the scoring for Real with a stunning long-range strike just seven minutes into the match.

Despite Real’s early lead, the hosts struggled to break through Celtic’s resilient defense. Celtic’s determined backline, supported by a solid performance from goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty, kept the Spanish side at bay for much of the game.

Celtic started the second half strongly, with Emma Lawton and Murphy Agnew both missing chances to equalize. However, Real Madrid found their rhythm, with substitute Signe Bruun heading in Eva Navarro’s cross in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0. Caroline Moller added a third with a composed chip over Daugherty, and Linda Caicedo sealed the victory with a penalty late on.

Celtic, winless and without a goal after two group matches, showed signs of improvement despite the defeat. Head coach Elena Sadiku praised her team’s resilience, noting that the performance, especially in the first half, was a significant step up from their 2-0 loss to Twente in the opening game.

With Chelsea up next in back-to-back matches, Celtic face a tough challenge as they aim to secure their first points of the group stage.
