Celtic Sign Denmark Captain Kasper Schmeichel on One-Year Deal

Celtic has secured the signing of Denmark captain Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year contract. Schmeichel, 37, joins as a free agent after his departure from Belgian club Anderlecht at the end of last season. The veteran goalkeeper steps in to replace former Manchester City teammate Joe Hart, who has retired.

Schmeichel, who has 105 international caps, will join the Scottish champions during their United States tour. “Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success,” Schmeichel told the club’s website. “Celtic is what football is all about.”

The Danish keeper is renowned for his 11-year tenure at Leicester City, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s remarkable Premier League triumph in 2016. Schmeichel later reunited with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at Leicester, where they won the 2021 FA Cup and the FA Community Shield.

“He [Rodgers] is a top manager and someone I can’t wait to work with again,” Schmeichel added. “I will be doing all I can to keep Celtic on top.”

Schmeichel began his career at Manchester City and had a brief stint in the Scottish Premiership 17 years ago on loan to Falkirk. His career also included spells at Notts County and Leeds before his significant contribution to Leicester City. After leaving Leicester, Schmeichel spent a season at Nice and then moved to Belgium in 2023, making 33 appearances for Anderlecht and keeping eight clean sheets.
