Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart has revealed his decision to retire from professional football at the conclusion of the current season, stating his desire to “smash through the finish line.”
The 36-year-old, who enjoyed a distinguished career representing England and various clubs including Manchester City, conveyed his intention to step away from the game after his third season with Celtic.
Manager Brendan Rodgers hailed Hart’s contribution to football, emphasizing his status as a “huge miss to the game” and praising his illustrious career that spanned domestic and international success.
Reflecting on his decision, Hart expressed gratitude for his physical condition, acknowledging that while he feels “physically great,” he recognizes the inevitability of time’s passage. Despite feeling at his peak physically and mentally, he believes it’s the right time to conclude his football journey on his own terms.
Hart’s professional journey, which began at a young age, saw him accumulate 690 club appearances, showcasing his talent and dedication across various teams including Shrewsbury, Manchester City, and Tottenham, among others.
On the international stage, Hart represented England in four consecutive major tournaments, earning 75 caps for his country. His illustrious career includes numerous domestic and international accolades, with six cup medals from his time at Manchester City and Celtic.
Acknowledging Hart’s significant contribution to Celtic’s recent successes, Rodgers commended the goalkeeper’s professionalism, describing him as a “tremendous man” and a valuable asset to both Celtic and the wider football community.
