Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz delighted fans on Court One with a commanding second-round victory over Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic. The Spaniard secured a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-2 win, showcasing his skill and determination.
The match started with a thrilling first set, where both players exchanged breaks and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Alcaraz managed to clinch the set in a tight tie-break, which he described as the turning point: “The first set was the key for me to pull out all the nerves. It was really close.”
After a grueling five-set match in the first round, Vukic appeared fatigued. He fell behind 5-2 in the opening set but rallied to force a tie-break, coming close to a comeback from 5-1 down to 5-4. However, Alcaraz elevated his game to take the set and dominated the next two sets, wrapping up the match efficiently.
Alcaraz, aiming for back-to-back major titles following his French Open triumph, expressed satisfaction with his performance: “I’m really happy about my performance today.”
Looking ahead, Alcaraz will face American 29th seed Frances Tiafoe in the third round. Tiafoe, who was defeated by Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open, advanced with a 7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-3 win over Croatia’s Borna Coric. Reflecting on their upcoming match, Alcaraz acknowledged the challenge: “We played a really good match in the US Open. I know that he is a really talented player, he is even tougher here on grass with his style. It’s going to be a really difficult match for me but I’m ready to take that challenge, I’m ready to play a really high level of tennis.”
