Canelo Alvarez Determined to Prove He’s Still the Best Against Edgar Berlanga

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is ready to defend his WBO, WBA, and WBC super-middleweight titles against the undefeated Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas on Saturday, with a point to prove. The Mexican boxing legend, boasting a record of 61 wins, two draws, and just two losses, is eager to demonstrate that he remains at the top of the sport.

“I always take my fights seriously and train 100% no matter who is in there. I always have the same mentality,” Alvarez said ahead of the bout. “I will show everybody I’m still the best.”

Alvarez’s opponent, Berlanga, hails from New York with Puerto Rican roots and has yet to taste defeat in his 22 professional bouts. Coming off a victory against Belfast’s Padraig McCrory in February, Berlanga is looking to make a statement on the sport’s biggest stage.

“There are a lot of doubters out there… Saturday night I’m going to make them believers,” the 27-year-old challenger declared. “This is the top of the mountain, it doesn’t get any bigger, and now it’s about me becoming great and putting my last name in the history books forever.”

Alvarez, aiming for his fifth consecutive win following a loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, acknowledges Berlanga’s strengths but remains confident in his own abilities. “He is young, a good fighter and is strong, but I’ve been in there with everybody and have so much experience. I’m strong and have a lot of talent – I’m just the best.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn, representing Berlanga, has faith in his fighter’s abilities, calling him the “most determined and most confident challenger” and promising a tough fight for Canelo. “This is like the lottery ticket of boxing. We’re in Las Vegas where you roll dice, but we’re not just looking to roll the dice – we want to collect the ticket as well.”
