Brentford have secured the services of striker Igor Thiago from Club Brugge in a club-record £30 million deal. The 23-year-old Brazilian, who becomes the first from his country to join the Bees, finalized the move after agreeing to the transfer in February.
Thiago, who netted 18 goals in 34 matches during Brugge’s title-winning campaign in the Belgian league, is anticipated to fill the void left by Ivan Toney. The England international is in the final year of his contract and is reportedly considering a move to a bigger club.
“I’m very happy to have signed for Brentford and to get to know the club,” Thiago said. The forward has been handed the number nine shirt, with fellow forward Kevin Schade moving to number seven.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Thiago added, “It’s an immense source of happiness for me, to be able to play for this club in the Premier League.”
Thiago’s impressive performance last season earned him the young player of the season accolade in the UEFA Conference League. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “I think that throughout my career, since I left Brazil, I think that’s what I was looking for – to gain good energy, win titles, make a name for myself, make history.”
