Brazilian Police Close Investigation into Antony Domestic Abuse Allegations Without Charges

A Brazilian police investigation into domestic abuse allegations against Manchester United winger Antony has concluded without charges being brought against the player. However, prosecutors may still review the case and could pursue further action.

The 24-year-old footballer, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing, remains under investigation by Greater Manchester Police in the UK. The allegations surfaced in September last year, with three women accusing Antony of domestic abuse. Despite these claims, Antony has not been arrested or charged in either Brazil or the UK.

In a statement, Antony’s lawyers confirmed the closure of the investigation by São Paulo’s fifth Women’s Defense Precinct, saying: “The defence of player Antony Matheus dos Santos…confirms that the police investigation…was closed without any police indictment.” They expressed confidence in Antony’s innocence and in the confidentiality of the investigations.

While the police investigation in Brazil has ended without an indictment, officials indicated that the case has not been fully dropped. The prosecutor’s office is still reviewing the findings and could choose to conduct an independent investigation.

Antony, who joined Manchester United from Ajax for £82 million in September 2022, became the club’s second-most expensive signing. The allegations against him first emerged during the international break in September 2023, when Brazilian outlet UOL reported accusations made by his ex-partner Gabriela Cavallin, which Antony denies. Additional claims of assault were later made by Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana, relating to incidents in 2022, which Antony also denies.

Greater Manchester Police became involved after one of the alleged incidents was reported to have taken place at a Manchester hotel. In response, Manchester United granted Antony leave with full pay on 10 September 2023 to address the allegations. He resumed training on 29 September after voluntarily speaking with Greater Manchester Police and returned to playing in early October.
