Brazil Held by Colombia, to Face Uruguay in Copa America Quarter-Finals

Brazil will clash with Uruguay in the Copa America quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw against Colombia in their final group-stage match.

Brazil, five-time World Cup champions, entered the match in California needing a win to secure the top spot in their group. They started well, with Barcelona winger Raphinha netting a stunning free-kick to give them an early lead.

Colombia, unbeaten since February 2022, fought back and equalized just before half-time through Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz, who scored from close range. Colombia nearly clinched victory when Rafael Borre missed a close-range chance, firing over the bar from a Johan Mojica cross in the 84th minute.

The draw means Colombia finishes top of Group D, securing a favorable quarter-final tie against Panama. Meanwhile, Brazil, as group runners-up, will face 15-time Copa America winners Uruguay. Brazil will be without Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr in the quarter-final due to suspension after he received his second yellow card of the tournament.

In the other Group D match, Costa Rica defeated Paraguay 2-1 with goals from Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer. Despite the victory, Costa Rica needed other results to go their way and ultimately finished a point behind Brazil, thus missing out on the knockout stages.

The quarter-finals kick off on Friday, with holders Argentina taking on Ecuador at 02:00 BST.
