Borussia Dortmund Stun Atletico Madrid to Reach Champions League Semi-Finals

In a stunning comeback, Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 11 years by defeating Atletico Madrid 5-4 on aggregate.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Dortmund produced a scintillating display, with Julian Brandt and loanee Ian Maatsen finding the net early on with goals from tight angles.

However, Atletico Madrid quickly responded, leveling the tie at 3-3 on aggregate with Mario Hermoso’s deflected header shortly after halftime. Angel Correa’s close-range finish then put Atletico ahead on aggregate.

But Dortmund refused to be beaten, with Niclas Fullkrug’s looping header and Marcel Sabitzer’s drilled finish propelling them to victory in a thrilling second half.

Maatsen, whose goal played a crucial role in Dortmund’s triumph, expressed his elation, describing the moment as a dream come true. The Dutch defender, on loan from Chelsea, showcased his talent on the grand stage of the Champions League, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Dortmund’s triumph marks their first semi-final appearance since 2012-13, ending an 11-year absence from the last four. Their remarkable turnaround reflects their resilience and determination, especially considering their two-goal deficit from the first leg.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, endured disappointment as their Champions League campaign came to an end. Conceding four goals in a knockout tie for the first time since 2014, Diego Simeone’s side fell short of reaching the semi-finals for the seventh consecutive year.
