Blinken: US Seeks De-escalation with Iran, Vows Support for Israel’s Defense

In a statement on Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that the United States aims to avoid any escalation in hostilities with Iran while reaffirming unwavering support for Israel’s defense. Blinken’s remarks came in response to Iran’s recent attack on Israel, which he described as “unprecedented.”

“We don’t seek escalation, but we’ll continue to support the defense of Israel and to protect our personnel in the region,” Blinken stated at the outset of a meeting with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Tamim. He underscored that the international community stands united in condemning Iran’s aggressive actions against Israel.

The attack on Israel, launched by Iran late Saturday, involved more than 300 drones and missiles in retaliation for a strike on Iran’s consulate in Syria earlier in April. Blinken highlighted that most of the projectiles targeting Israel were intercepted with the assistance of the United States, Jordan, and other allies, showcasing the collective effort to defend against aggression.

Over the past 36 hours, Blinken engaged in extensive diplomatic discussions with key partners, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, Britain, and Germany, to coordinate a diplomatic response aimed at preventing further escalation in the region. These efforts reflect a commitment to maintaining stability and security amidst heightened tensions.

Echoing Blinken’s sentiments, Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister expressed concern about the potential for a wider conflict that could jeopardize international security. He urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions to resolve the crisis peacefully.
