Bishop Kukah: Tinubu Did Not Sign 2023 Presidential Peace Accord

Bishop Matthew Kukah, head of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, revealed that President Bola Tinubu did not sign the peace accord as a presidential candidate during the 2023 elections. Speaking in Benin City at the Edo Election Security Townhall, Kukah, a key member of the National Peace Committee, clarified that the peace accord is a moral commitment, not a legal one.

Kukah explained that the committee, co-led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, cannot compel candidates to participate, noting that the absence of such participation could send negative signals. He highlighted that similar incidents occurred in past elections, with some candidates failing to sign, only to sign later after public pressure.

“The Peace Committee’s role is not mandated by the Electoral Act but functions on moral grounds. We can’t force anyone to sign,” Kukah said, adding that while Tinubu didn’t sign, the opposition missed the opportunity to capitalize on it.
