Bianca Ojukwu Addresses Insecurity in Southeast Nigeria at AVID Convention

Iyom Bianca Ojukwu, widow of the late Biafra leader and former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, has highlighted the escalating insecurity in Southeast Nigeria, attributing it to opportunistic criminal elements exploiting separatist sentiments. Speaking at the annual convention of the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), she expressed concern over the pervasive violence affecting the region.

While acknowledging that insecurity is a national issue, Bianca pointed out that it is particularly pronounced in the Southeast. “The incessant killings and kidnappings, along with the increasing annexation of community farmlands by armed herdsmen and other dangerous invaders, have severely impacted agricultural, economic, and social activities in many Igbo communities,” she stated.

Bianca made her remarks during a conference that focused on critical issues facing Igbo homeland, emphasizing the need for unity among stakeholders, including military veterans, industry leaders, and government representatives. “Opportunistic criminals have seized upon the separatist agitation to commit these crimes, undermining the capabilities of security forces with their superior firepower,” she noted.

As the Special Guest of Honour, Bianca urged the five state governors in the region to collaborate in addressing the growing insecurity. She also called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, asserting that his freedom could lead to improvements in the region’s security landscape.

Bianca emphasized the importance of the Igbo diaspora in preserving their core values, identity, and heritage amid the ongoing challenges. The conference served as a platform for veterans and stakeholders to engage in dialogue and strategize for the advancement of Igboland, highlighting the pressing need for concerted efforts to combat insecurity.
