In a decisive move, the Benue State Police Command has taken action to seal off the All Progressives Congress (APC) State secretariat in Makurdi, effectively thwarting the planned political meeting scheduled by the Mr. Austin Agada-led Executives slated for Friday, March 1 and 3, 2024.
The scheduled meeting, convened by the APC executives alongside selected stakeholders and the newly appointed Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts, Dr. Matthias Byuan, was met with obstruction as the State Police Command intervened.
In a letter signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Samuel Gimba on behalf of the Commissioner of Police and addressed to Mr. Agada, the Police advised the suspension of the meetings. The directive referenced an earlier letter from Governor Hyacinth Alia, received on February 27, 2024, which imposed an embargo on all forms of political gatherings in the state due to heightened security concerns.
Governor Alia, through his Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, underscored the imperative of the ban in light of the volatile security situation exacerbated by the influx of armed herdsmen in the state. The letter emphasized the necessity to enforce the directive in order to maintain peace and security.
In compliance with the Governor’s directive, the Police urged Mr. Agada to suspend the planned meetings and all other political gatherings until further notice, citing concerns over the security atmosphere in the state.
Acting upon the directives from the Governor and the Police, security personnel were deployed to seal off the APC State Secretariat as early as 6 am on Friday morning. The heightened security presence, with stern-looking Police personnel manning the roads leading to the Secretariat, effectively halted any attempts to convene the scheduled meetings.
