Ben Stokes has set a new record for the fastest Test half-century by an England batter, reaching the milestone in just 24 balls during England’s 10-wicket victory over the West Indies at Edgbaston. Stokes broke the previous record of 28 balls set by Ian Botham in 1981 against India in Delhi.
Stepping in as an opener due to Zak Crawley’s injury, Stokes made an explosive start. England needed only 82 runs to complete a 3-0 series clean sweep, and Stokes led the charge, finishing unbeaten on 57 from 24 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. His rapid innings guided England to their target in just 7.2 overs.
At one point, Stokes was on 41 from 18 balls, nearly surpassing the men’s Test record of 21 balls for a half-century, held by Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq since 2014.
Stokes downplayed the significance of his achievement, stating, “A couple hit the middle of the bat, I was seeing it quite well.” He was unaware of his record-breaking performance until he discussed it with England assistant coach Paul Collingwood in the changing room.
Head coach Brendon McCullum praised Stokes for his leadership, noting, “The way he struck the ball was absolutely beautiful.”
Stokes will next play four games for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred before leading England in a three-Test series against Sri Lanka starting on 21 August.
