Bayern Munich faced a setback in their Bundesliga campaign as they dropped points against Freiburg, potentially trailing 10 points behind the league leaders by the weekend’s end.
Christian Gunter ignited the scoring for the mid-table hosts with a stunning 20-yard strike, putting Freiburg in the lead.
Despite Bayern’s efforts to turn the tide with Mathys Tel’s superb curling effort and Jamal Musiala’s well-placed shot after a solo run, Freiburg’s Lucas Holer clinched an 87th-minute volley, securing a point for the hosts.
Reflecting on Bayern’s performance, coach Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment, particularly with their lack of structure and discipline in the first half.
“We played completely without structure,” Tuchel remarked. “We were not disciplined. We were not in our positions, we lost possession going forward and allowed them to counter-attack.”
The defeat further amplifies Bayern’s struggles this season, as they now trail unbeaten league leaders Bayer Leverkusen by seven points. The Munich outfit’s decade-long dominance in German football appears to be at risk, with their run of 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles potentially coming to an end.
Additionally, Tuchel’s impending departure at the end of the season adds to the uncertainty surrounding Bayern’s future. Their hopes of salvaging silverware this season rely heavily on their upcoming Champions League last-16 second leg against Lazio, where they aim to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.
The match proved frustrating for Bayern’s England striker Harry Kane, who squandered several opportunities and failed to capitalize on his recent goal-scoring form, having netted three goals in two previous games.
