Renowned comedian Basketmouth has voiced his disillusionment with Nigeria’s economic and political state, declaring that the country may never improve. Speaking during a viral interview with AFRIMMA, the entertainer highlighted the persistent inflation and the drastic depreciation of the naira over the decades as key indicators of Nigeria’s unrelenting decline.
Reflecting on the naira’s value from 1970 to the present, Basketmouth said, “In the year I was born, 1970, it was one naira to a dollar, but now N1600 to 1 dollar. There was never a time from 1970 that the dollar crashed and went back to what it was. It has never happened.”
He criticized the government’s ineffective policies, citing the recent increase in passport fees as an example. “Now 100 pages of passport has been increased to N100,000. I suspect that our government planned to make the Nigerian population suffer,” he said, suggesting that this strategy would push more Nigerians to leave the country while profiting from the situation.
Although Basketmouth maintained a glimmer of hope for the future, his frustration was clear. “It’s not like I have given up hope, I’m hopeful maybe one day the country will be better… It’s over,” he sarcastically concluded.
