Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has acknowledged the challenging road ahead for his team in their quest for Champions League glory. The Catalan club, which has struggled in their European campaign, faces an uncertain path as they prepare to take on Napoli in the last 16 tie.
In an interview with Spanish outlet La Vanguardia, Gundogan admitted that Barcelona’s chances of winning the Champions League are slim compared to other teams in the competition. He stated, “There are other teams in the competition with more of a chance and better experience, but if we can reach the quarter-finals, we are entering special territory. I am a realist, but I also know it’s difficult for everybody.”
Reflecting on the recent resignation of Xavi as Barcelona’s head coach, Gundogan expressed surprise at the decision and regretted not being able to do more to support him. Xavi’s departure comes less than a year after leading Barcelona to their first La Liga title in four years.
