Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid in Miami: La Liga Eyes First US Fixture

Barcelona’s La Liga fixture against Atletico Madrid, scheduled for 22 December, could be held in Miami if the plan receives approval from Fifa. This would mark the first time a La Liga match is played in the United States.

La Liga officials are hopeful that Fifa, football’s global governing body, will give the green light to the proposal. The match is set just before La Liga pauses for its winter break, with both teams also scheduled to compete in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia in early January.

The idea of staging La Liga matches overseas has been in the works for some time. Barcelona had previously attempted to host a game in Miami against Girona in 2019, but that plan was abandoned due to opposition from Spain’s football association and the players’ union. However, La Liga president Javier Tebas remains keen on expanding the league’s global presence.

In recent years, Fifa has taken steps to explore the implications of hosting domestic league matches abroad. A working group was formed to study the issue after Fifa withdrew from a legal battle initiated by Relevent, a promoter seeking to stage competitive matches in the US.

While the Premier League has ruled out playing overseas games, La Liga remains optimistic about finalizing plans for this groundbreaking match in Miami.
