Barcelona, one of football’s iconic clubs, is contemplating a significant shift in its kit manufacturing strategy as its long-standing deal with Nike approaches its expiration in 2028. Reports suggest that the Catalan giants are exploring the possibility of producing and distributing their own kits, marking a potential departure from their partnership with Nike, which dates back to 1998.
President Joan Laporta has voiced dissatisfaction with Barcelona’s current deal with Nike, prompting the club to consider alternative options. Despite receiving a lucrative offer from Puma, exceeding €100 million (£86m/$108m) per season, Barcelona is deliberating the prospect of establishing an in-house manufacturing setup for their renowned kits, as reported by Sport.
Laporta’s discontent with Nike’s handling of the partnership was underscored by his recent remarks, where he hinted at contractual breaches by the sportswear giant. He stated, “We have some concerns and a situation that is not what we wanted. The operation has been deteriorating; we think they have breached the contract.”
Barcelona’s existing agreement with Nike, inked in 2016, ostensibly binds them until 2028. However, if the club manages to negotiate an early exit from the contract, it could open the door for fresh negotiations as soon as the upcoming season.
