Bandit Attack Claims One Life, Injures Another in Benue State

Tragedy struck the Ikobi community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State as bandits launched a deadly attack, resulting in the death of one individual and leaving another injured. This incident comes just days after four people were killed in a similar assault within the same local government area.

According to reports from a resident who opted to remain anonymous for safety reasons, the victims fell prey to the ambush while returning home between Ikobi and Oloba villages on Monday. The deceased, identified as Aminu Akanu, had recently returned from Lagos to visit his widowed mother, only to meet a tragic end.

Akanu’s untimely demise has left the community in mourning, particularly considering his purposeful journey to settle family matters after his father, a police officer, passed away years ago. The attack, which occurred around 5 pm, claimed Akanu’s life, while another individual narrowly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Adding to the distress, reports indicate that bandits have escalated their violence, with claims of house burnings in nearby villages like Akpete. Eche Ikobi, Chairman of the Apa Development Association, confirmed the grim reality of the situation, recounting the fatal encounter as the victims were returning to the village on a motorcycle.

In response to the escalating violence, Abu Umoru, the House of Assembly member representing Apa State Constituency, affirmed the attacks, assuring that soldiers have taken action to repel the assailants. However, despite efforts to reach the state command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, for official comments, communication remained elusive as of press time on Tuesday.
