Australia secured a 25-16 win over Wales in Sydney, giving new coach Joe Schmidt a triumphant start in his first match in charge. Tries from Taniela Tupou, Filipo Daugunu, and Tom Wright ensured the Wallabies’ victory, while Wales managed a penalty try and nine points from new fly-half Ben Thomas.
This marks Wales’ eighth consecutive international defeat, their worst streak since 2012-2013, and drops them to 11th in World Rugby’s rankings. The match also extended Wales’ winless streak against Australia in Australia to 12 games, dating back to 1969.
For Australia, this was their first match since their pool stage exit at the 2023 World Cup, which led to the end of Eddie Jones’ tenure. Schmidt, appointed in May, included seven new caps in his squad, including centre Josh Flook and lock Jeremy Williams. Captain Liam Wright and his team delivered a robust performance, despite a few shaky moments.
Wales started strong with a penalty from Thomas, but Australia quickly equalized through Noah Lolesio. Taniela Tupou’s try and Lolesio’s conversions gave Australia a lead, though Wales briefly narrowed the gap with a penalty try. The match saw intense defense and strategic plays, with key contributions from Australia’s Tupou and Wales’ Aaron Wainwright, who unfortunately limped off in the final minute.
Despite a bright start to the second half for Wales, Australia’s defense held firm. Daugunu’s try and Wright’s spectacular solo effort secured the victory for the Wallabies. Replacement flanker James Botham’s disallowed try due to obstruction added to Wales’ frustrations.
Wales’ injury concerns include Gareth Thomas and Liam Williams, alongside Wainwright. Australia’s captain Wright highlighted his side’s resilience, and Schmidt will look to build on this victory as they aim to wrap up the two-Test series in Melbourne next Saturday.
