Aston Villa have re-signed England Under-21 winger Jaden Philogene from Hull City, less than 12 months after his initial transfer to the Tigers. Philogene, 22, has committed to a five-year contract with Villa after they matched Ipswich Town’s £18 million offer for the forward. Due to a 30% sell-on clause in his previous agreement, Hull will receive approximately £13.5 million from the transfer.
Philogene, who had been keen to move to Ipswich, returned from Hull’s training camp in Turkey and underwent a medical on Monday. Despite interest from Everton and Crystal Palace, Villa’s late intervention secured the winger’s return. He scored 12 goals in 32 games for Hull last season, contributing to their seventh-place finish in the Championship.
Villa’s summer spending continues with the imminent signing of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana for £50 million. These acquisitions, along with previous signings Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior from Juventus, Ross Barkley from Luton Town for £5 million, and Lewis Dobbin from Everton for £9 million, bring Villa’s total summer expenditure to around £140 million.
The sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42 million in June has helped Villa comply with profit and sustainability regulations as they prepare for their Champions League campaign following a fourth-place finish in the 2023-24 Premier League season.
