Arsenal’s World-Record Bid for Keira Walsh Rejected by Barcelona

Arsenal’s ambitious attempt to sign England midfielder Keira Walsh from Barcelona has been thwarted, with the European champions rejecting a reported £930,000 bid late in the Women’s Super League transfer window. Despite Walsh having just one year left on her contract, Barcelona was unwilling to let the 27-year-old leave.

Walsh, who joined Barcelona in 2022 for a then-record fee of £400,000 from Manchester City, has played a crucial role in the team’s back-to-back league and European successes. However, she has already informed the club that she does not intend to renew her contract next summer, potentially paving the way for a free transfer unless Barcelona can change her mind.

Arsenal’s offer, which would have been a world-record fee, surpassing the £685,000 paid for Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji by Bay FC earlier this year, came just as the Women’s Super League window closed at 23:00 BST on Friday. Meanwhile, Barcelona would have had until Monday, when Spain’s Liga F window shuts, to find a replacement.

Despite the transfer speculation, Barcelona coach Pere Romeu expressed confidence in Walsh’s commitment to the team, stating, “She’s been with us throughout pre-season and is a key player for us… We’re definitely counting on her this season.” Walsh’s influence was evident in Barca’s 3-1 win over Real Sociedad, where she registered an assist.
