Arsenal Sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for Potential £31.6m

Arsenal have announced the signing of Spain midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in a deal potentially worth up to £31.6m. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year, with the Gunners paying an initial £27.4m plus £4.2m in add-ons.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised Merino’s quality, experience, and versatility, noting his impact during Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign, where he scored a crucial late goal in the quarter-final against Germany and played in all seven matches of the tournament.

Merino joins Arsenal as their third signing of the transfer window, following Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain goalkeeper David Raya, who has had his loan move from Brentford made permanent.

“Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability and positive character,” said Arteta. “His performances throughout the Euros were exceptional, showcasing his winning mentality.”

Merino’s addition offers Arteta more midfield options, complementing Declan Rice and competing with Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard. The new recruit, who previously played in the Premier League with Newcastle before joining Real Sociedad in 2018, made 45 appearances for the Spanish side last season, scoring eight goals.
