Arsenal Head Coach Jonas Eidevall Resigns Amid Poor Start to Season

Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall has resigned following a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season, which saw the team win just one of their first four Women’s Super League (WSL) matches. Eidevall’s decision comes after a string of poor results, including a 5-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and a 2-1 loss to Chelsea at home.

Renee Slegers, the assistant coach, will take over on an interim basis, starting with two key fixtures this week, including a Champions League match against Valerenga.

“We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021,” Arsenal’s sporting director Edu stated. “Our focus now turns to appointing a new head coach while supporting Renee in the interim.”

Eidevall, who signed a new three-year contract last October, led Arsenal to consecutive top-three WSL finishes and two Women’s League Cup titles. However, mounting pressure and growing unrest among fans led to his departure. Despite his success, including a 70% win ratio over 70 matches, Eidevall admitted that he was no longer the right person to guide the club forward.

Slegers, who worked with Eidevall at Rosengard in Sweden, expressed her sadness at his departure but remains focused on her immediate task with the team.

The club will now begin the search for a new head coach, with several candidates, including former Manchester United manager Casey Stoney, being mentioned as possible replacements.
