Arsenal came from behind to maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win against winless Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners overturned a shock lead by Cameron Archer, thanks to second-half goals from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka, securing three points and keeping them within one point of Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Southampton, still without a win after seven games, managed to frustrate Arsenal in the first half, despite sustained pressure from the hosts. The visitors took an unexpected lead 10 minutes into the second half when Archer finished a swift counterattack after Raheem Sterling, making his first league start for Arsenal, lost possession.
The goal served as a wake-up call for Arsenal, and just three minutes later, Havertz equalized with a superb finish off the post. Martinelli followed up with a goal 10 minutes later, converting Saka’s pinpoint cross. Southampton fought back and came close to an equalizer, with efforts from Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Adam Armstrong hitting the woodwork, but Saka sealed the victory with a clinical goal in the final stages.
Saka, who provided two assists and scored Arsenal’s third, was lauded by manager Mikel Arteta for his decisive performance, which took his tally to 10 goal involvements in 10 games this season. Arteta described him as “unbelievable” and crucial to the team’s success.
The win marked Arsenal’s 400th home victory in Premier League history, making them only the second club to achieve this milestone. They remain unbeaten in 16 matches across all competitions. Meanwhile, Southampton matched their worst-ever top-flight run, going 20 games without a win, a streak they last endured in 1969.
