Argentina Thrash Australia 67-27 in Record-Breaking Rugby Championship Win

Argentina delivered a stunning comeback to crush Australia 67-27, marking the Wallabies’ heaviest-ever Test defeat. Despite leading 20-3 in the first half, Australia saw their advantage evaporate as Argentina piled on 64 points in Santa Fe, surpassing the Wallabies’ previous record loss of 61-22 to South Africa in 1997.

The Pumas scored nine tries, including two each from Joaquin Oviedo and Juan Cruz Mallia, exposing Australia’s fragile defense. After a dominant first 30 minutes from the Wallabies, Argentina began their onslaught with Mateo Carreras’ try, quickly followed by captain Julian Montoya’s powerful finish in his 100th cap. The hosts never looked back, with a relentless second-half performance that left Australia reeling.

Australia managed a consolation try from Tate McDermott, but it was not enough to stop Argentina, who now sit second in the Rugby Championship standings. Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies, meanwhile, find themselves at the bottom, struggling after three defeats in four games.

Schmidt, disappointed by the loss, acknowledged his team’s defensive collapse, stating, “To lead 20-3 and get run down is really disappointing… We lost connection in our defensive line, and they were operating off lightning-quick ball.”

Argentina’s dominant scrum and breakdown play proved too much for Australia, who will need to regroup after a humbling defeat in the Rugby Championship.
