The Arewa Progressive Forum (APFO) has distanced itself from recent statements made by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approach to security in the region.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of APFO, Magaji Abbas Danbatta, the group expressed regret over the NEF’s remarks, emphasizing that they do not reflect the Northern agenda for peace and national unity, which they consider non-negotiable. Danbatta criticized the NEF’s deviation from its role as advisers to the government on national issues, warning against openly expressing regret over majority decisions.
APFO voiced support for Minister of State Defense, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, for his response to the NEF’s criticism of President Tinubu. The group accused the NEF of prioritizing personal gains over the unity and survival of Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of Northern elders serving as mediators and opinion shapers on national unity without regional bias.
The statement highlighted concerns over the NEF’s focus on President Tinubu while neglecting to address internal political conflicts within the Northern region. APFO urged Northern elders to play a more proactive role in addressing regional issues rather than resorting to public criticism.
Despite the disagreement with the NEF, APFO commended the efforts of National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of State (Defence), Bello Muhammad Matawalle, for their proactive measures in improving security in the Northern region.
