APC Uncovers Plot to Destabilize Party Ahead of Plateau Local Elections

The Plateau State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised alarm over alleged plans by certain individuals to cause internal strife within the party ahead of the local government elections scheduled for October 9, 2024. In a statement released in Jos on Monday, the party’s Acting Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, warned that a group operating under the name “foundation members” is attempting to create confusion.

Bamaiyi disclosed, “Information at the disposal of the Party reveals that a group of persons under the name ‘foundation members’ is mobilizing some people to create confusion and rift in the Party.” He added that the group aims to use media platforms to misinform the public about the state of affairs within the APC.

This comes at a time when the party has faced significant defections, particularly in the Kanam local government area. Key figures like former Commissioner Dyabbu Garga and former Deputy Speaker Saleh Yipmong have recently switched allegiance to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Addressing the issue, Bamaiyi remarked that the term “foundation members” itself suggests a deliberate attempt to sow division within the party, which treats all members equally. He stated, “For anybody or a group of persons to wake up and claim superiority over others is an attempt to create class difference… to weaken the Party structure.”

Bamaiyi further warned that the timing of the group’s actions is suspect, given the upcoming local government elections. He urged APC members to remain calm, emphasizing that the group’s agenda seems designed to disrupt the party’s focus on the elections. “The APC is appealing to its members to remain calm and resolute… as it is nothing but a hatchet job to frustrate the Party from actively participating in the local government elections in the State,” he concluded.
