In the aftermath of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Edo State, which saw Sen. Monday Okpebholo emerging as the victor amidst controversy, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), the party’s leader in Central Edo, has issued a rallying cry for unity among party members across the state’s three senatorial districts. His call comes amidst preparations for the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
In a statement titled “The Road to Osadebe Avenue,” Esekhaigbe urged all aggrieved party members to prioritize the interests of the APC, especially considering the prospect of Edo Central producing the next governor after a hiatus of over 19 months since May 2007. He emphasized that the aftermath of the primary should not be a platform for settling old scores among party leaders.
Esekhaigbe’s statement emphasized the need for humility in victory and magnanimity in defeat, stressing that a united front is crucial for navigating the challenging path to Osadebe Avenue. He reiterated the principle of “no victor, no vanquished,” calling for a spirit of reconciliation among party leaders and members.
Meanwhile, amidst the political maneuvering, other parties are gearing up for the upcoming election. Patience Key has been affirmed as the flagbearer of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), pledging a transformative agenda focused on human capital development and good governance.
Similarly, Pastor Azehme Azena of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) emerged as the party’s governorship candidate after a primary election in Benin City. Azena emphasized the importance of unity within the party, vowing to reconcile with fellow aspirants to bolster the NNPP’s chances in the forthcoming election.
