After days of intense scrutiny and contention, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has finalized its governorship primary election, ultimately declaring Senator Monday Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central, as its candidate.
Senator Okpebholo secured a resounding victory, garnering 12,433 votes, surpassing his closest contender, Hon Dennis Idahosa, who obtained 6,541 votes. The declaration was made by the Chairman of the APC Edo Primary Election Committee, Governor Bassey Otu, who affirmed Okpebholo’s fulfillment of all party requirements and his significant lead in the election.
In his announcement, Governor Otu urged all aspirants and party leaders to set aside differences and unite in preparation for the upcoming September 21 election.
The breakdown of votes revealed Blessing Agbomhere securing 731 votes, Charles Airhiavbere with 1,181 votes, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu with 378 votes, among others. Notably, Senator Okpebholo’s decisive victory underscored his overwhelming support within the party.
However, following the declaration, one of the aspirants, Hon Anamero Dekeri, contested the outcome, alleging manipulation and expressing dissatisfaction with the process. Despite protests, the victory of Senator Okpebholo was affirmed by the election committee.
In response to his win, an elated Senator Okpebholo expressed gratitude to party members for their unwavering support and confidence in his candidacy. He emphasized his commitment to bringing about significant infrastructural development across all sectors of Edo State if elected as governor.
This triumph for Senator Okpebholo signifies a significant shift in the political landscape of Edo State and serves as a stern message to the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). With the APC now united behind its chosen candidate, the stage is set for a competitive and spirited electoral contest come September.
