The Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Council, Lagos, Jelili Suleiman, has rejected his suspension by the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. In a statement released by his lawyer, Dr. Abdul Mahmud, Suleiman argued that the suspension violates the autonomy of local governments as affirmed by the Supreme Court.
The suspension was imposed by the Lagos Assembly, led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who directed the Council’s Vice Chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, to assume control. Suleiman, however, claims that this move is a clear defiance of constitutional principles, citing the Supreme Court decision in Attorney General of the Federation vs. Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Ors (SC/CV/343/2024), which upheld local government autonomy.
Mahmud condemned the Assembly’s decision, stating that it exceeds its constitutional mandate. He emphasized that local government councils have their own legislative bodies responsible for oversight and governance. A pending lawsuit filed by Suleiman before the Federal High Court challenges the Assembly’s oversight powers over Alimosho Local Government.
The lawyer further criticized the Assembly’s actions as “jejune rascality” and warned that undermining court orders could lead to eroding public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law. He called for the immediate reversal of Suleiman’s suspension, stressing that the legislative body’s actions threaten democratic governance.
The Lagos State House of Assembly’s decision, reached during Monday’s plenary, suspended Suleiman indefinitely following allegations of misconduct.
