Defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a slow start to beat Tommy Paul and set up another semi-final clash with Daniil Medvedev, mirroring their meeting from last year.
Medvedev, who overcame world number one Jannik Sinner, seeks to avenge his 2023 semi-final defeat to Alcaraz, who won in straight sets before claiming the title. Alcaraz, the 21-year-old Spaniard, was a set and a break down against the American 12th seed but triumphed 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-2 after a grueling three hours and 11 minutes on Court One.
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, fought hard against Sinner, securing a 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3 victory in a match lasting four hours on Centre Court. Alcaraz, targeting his fourth Grand Slam title, expressed his readiness for the challenge ahead. “Daniil’s a really great player. It’s the same semi-final as last year so hopefully I’m going to get the same result,” Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz’s Resilient Comeback
Alcaraz, a keen football fan eager to catch Spain’s Euro 2024 semi-final against France, appeared in a rush as he quickly applied pressure, breaking Paul to lead 2-1. However, Paul, who won at Queen’s Club last month, immediately broke back, making for an intense contest filled with powerful shots and high energy.
Paul secured the first set 7-5, but Alcaraz responded by leveling the match in the second set. His court coverage, spectacular winners, and strong serves allowed him to dominate the subsequent sets. “When I lost the first set it was difficult,” Alcaraz admitted. “But I knew it’s a really long journey so I had to stay there. I believe in myself the whole time.”
Medvedev Ends Sinner’s Streak
Medvedev’s victory against Sinner marked the end of a five-match losing streak against the Italian, who had defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final earlier this year. Sinner, battling illness, won the first set in a tie-break, but Medvedev capitalized on Sinner’s declining condition to win the next two sets.
Despite a medical timeout and a brief resurgence from Sinner, Medvedev maintained his composure, winning the third set in a tie-break and eventually sealing the match in the fifth set. “I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it needs to be a tough match,” Medvedev said. “I’m really happy to win, really happy with my game and looking forward.”
Semi-Final Showdown
Alcaraz and Medvedev’s semi-final promises to be a thrilling encounter, as both players aim for a spot in the Wimbledon final. Alcaraz, with his impressive record and confidence, and Medvedev, seeking redemption, will undoubtedly deliver a captivating match.
