The political unrest surrounding the chairmanship election results in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio hails from, has been resolved after a reversal of the results by the State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC). The decision to alter the results has solidified what many see as a strategic alliance between Governor Umo Eno and Akpabio, a relationship previously thought unlikely due to past tensions between the Senate President and former Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Governor Umo Eno convened a meeting on October 9, 2024, with stakeholders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Essien Udim to quell tensions that had arisen after the October 5 local government election. The meeting successfully placated aggrieved PDP candidates whose victories were overturned to favor the All Progressives Congress (APC). As part of the reconciliation, several PDP candidates, including Enobong Patrick Friday and Mrs. Sussana Nyoyoko, were offered appointments as Special and Personal Assistants to the governor.
The outcome of the Essien Udim election had sparked concerns about Governor Eno’s growing closeness to Akpabio, with some questioning whether the alliance was in the best interest of the state. Critics argued that the secrecy surrounding the election decision suggested a “trade by barter” arrangement to save Akpabio from political embarrassment. Despite these concerns, the governor emphasized that his relationship with Akpabio is aimed at maintaining peace in the state and does not signal any intention to defect to the APC.
Governor Eno defended his actions by stating that the collaboration with Akpabio has brought stability to Akwa Ibom, adding that the alliance benefits the state by ensuring peace. He reiterated his commitment to the PDP and insisted that his relationship with Akpabio is focused on governance, not party politics.
While the resolution of the Essien Udim election dispute has calmed the political atmosphere, some PDP stakeholders remain wary of the governor’s closeness to the Senate President. However, others, including former Attorney General Uwemedimo Nwoko, praised the governor for keeping his promise of a free and fair local government election.
Governor Eno, addressing concerns, assured that his alliance with Akpabio is not a sign of political defection but rather a pragmatic approach to ensuring peace and development in the state.
