Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, known for his roles in “Star Trek: Discovery” and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” has passed away at the age of 49. His family announced his death in a statement shared on his verified social media accounts on Sunday.
Described as a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son, and friend, Mitchell had been battling ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) since 2018. Despite his diagnosis, Mitchell continued to share updates about his life and health with periodic posts on social media.
In August, Mitchell reflected on the fifth anniversary of his diagnosis, expressing gratitude for the gift of life despite the challenges he faced. He highlighted the support and love he received from friends, family, caregivers, and medical professionals throughout his journey with ALS.
A native of Canada, Mitchell amassed over 50 film and television credits throughout his acting career. He portrayed Carol Danvers’ father in Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” and appeared in various TV series such as “Jericho,” “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and “Switched at Birth.”
From 2017 to 2021, Mitchell gained recognition for his portrayal of Klingon characters Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio, in “Star Trek: Discovery.”
Mitchell’s family remembered him as a “hope seeker, daydreamer, dream believer” who faced his illness with strength and grace. Despite the challenges posed by ALS, Mitchell remained committed to living a full and joyous life, especially for the sake of his two young children.
