888 Candidates Fail Nigerian Bar Examination; 251 Achieve First Class

The Nigerian Law School has announced that 888 candidates failed the final bar examination conducted in November 2023, while 4,412 candidates were successful out of 5,300 who sat for the exam. Among the successful candidates, 251 achieved first-class honors.

Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, disclosed these figures at the call to bar ceremony held in Abuja. He expressed satisfaction with the candidates’ performance, highlighting the unprecedented number of first-class graduates.

Addressing the challenges facing the judiciary, Mary Peter-Odili, the chairman of the Body of Benchers and a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, lamented the dwindling confidence in the legal system due to conflicting judgments and indiscipline among lawyers.

To address these issues, Peter-Odili announced the formation of a committee comprising senior members of the legal profession tasked with proposing solutions to the problem of conflicting judgments. She urged the newly called lawyers to uphold integrity and avoid actions that could tarnish the judiciary’s image.

The call to the bar ceremony also saw the induction of notable individuals into the legal profession, including former Governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi.
