69-Year-Old Bus Driver in Police Custody for Allegedly Crushing 10-Year-Old to Death in Lagos

A tragic incident unfolded along the Iganmu-Mile 2 Expressway in Lagos State as a 69-year-old commercial bus driver, Waidi Saheed, found himself in police custody following the alleged death of a 10-year-old boy, simply identified as Chukwudi. The event, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, shook witnesses and authorities alike.

According to reports gathered, the driver, behind the wheel of a Nissan Coastal commercial bus with registration number JJE-134 XK, purportedly struck the young victim due to speeding. Eyewitnesses revealed that Chukwudi and his father were standing on top of a culvert near the Doyin bus stop when tragedy struck.

“One Bernard said he was going to church with his children at about 7 a.m., and while standing on a culvert at the Doyin bus stop along the Iganmu-Mile 2 Expressway, a Nissan Coastal commercial bus with registration number JJE-134 XK driven by one Waidi Saheed, aged 65, who was alleged to be driving at high speed, hit his son, aged 10, and smashed his skull, and he died instantly,” a police source disclosed.

The situation escalated when some miscreants attacked law enforcement officers with bottles and stones during the process of evacuating the deceased’s body. However, swift intervention from patrol teams helped disperse the assailants and ensure the safe removal of the corpse.

Confirming the incident, the state command Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, assured that the necessary steps had been taken. “The corpse has been taken to the morgue at the Yaba General Hospital. The driver was later arrested, and the accident vehicle is in police custody. The investigation is ongoing,” he stated.
