A total of 14 inmates who fled from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State have been recaptured, according to Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The escape occurred after a severe downpour on Wednesday night caused extensive damage to the facility, including a breach in the perimeter fence, enabling the escape of 119 inmates.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the urgent need for reforms in over 240 custodial centres nationwide following the incident. Tunji-Ojo assured the public of the Federal Government’s commitment to bringing the remaining fleeing inmates back into custody.
Providing updates on the situation, Duza stated, “Our intelligence officers, armed squadron officers, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other security agencies, are combing neighbouring communities to find the fleeing inmates. 14 fleeing inmates have been recaptured so far. The search is still ongoing.”
Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the remaining escaped inmates, with security agencies working tirelessly to ensure their swift return to custody.
