What's going on in our schools?

Dylan Schumacher

Do you ever sit in class and wonder if you’re the only one who’s doing anything in this school? Well I do all the time so I decided to go out to all our classrooms and interview our teachers to see what was going on. My first interview was with Mr. Friesen and he told me about his Modern History class. They had done some Barack Obama research, talked about the Reagan administration up to George W. Bush and were working on a news broadcast of the 9/11 attacks.

Next on my list of interviewees was Mr. Whyte. We talked about his 8th grade Earth Science class. He told me that they were learning about all types of water from land water, the rivers, streams, and the water cycle. One project they just did was called the spouting water project and Mr. Whyte said “They made a real mess of things!” In Mr. Schumacher’s Science Stuff class (which I’m a part of) we have been studying forensic science. We did these cool CSI web adventures on line where you go through all the steps in CSI -- like toxicology, firearms markers, and even a medical examiner where you do an autopsy to try and figure out how someone died or was murdered.

Mrs. Lindgren’s 7th grade Pre-Algebra class will be working on their Cookie Recipe assessments. In this assessment they will do unit conversions without changing the size of the cookies. Mr. Sweem and his sophomore English class are beginning a unit on the author Ray Bradbury. They’re reading “The Pedestrian”, “The Sound of Thunder” and also “There Came Soft Rain”. The project will conclude with a genre collage.

Mrs. Beller and her elementary classes are starting a basic unit of basketball. They are learning the fundamentals of dribbling, passing and shooting. This unit of basketball is for the Hoops for Heart foundation and all money goes toward teaching people to do CPR. Another class I’m part of is Ms. Jensen’s senior Computer Applications class. We just got done doing our big shot videos project where you film 6 different camera angles and edit it on Movie Maker.

Last but not least is Mr. Mason -- our unpredictable English teacher. He told me about what he and the 8th grade English class was doing with their time. They just finished Edgar Allen Poe projects.

Well after doing this assignment and these interviews, I have decided that all may not be as it seems. Maybe kids are actually learning and doing stuff during class instead of sitting there with their heads up in the clouds. So I would like to give a big shout out to all the teachers for keeping us kids busy with learning!
