What is An American?

By Tymber Long

Tymber is a fifth grader at Humann Elementary School in Lincoln. Her father is currently serving the military stationed in Kosovo.

She is the granddaughter of John and Suzanne Kaufman of Newman Grove; and Wauneta Bagger, Albion; and great granddaughter of Leo Swanson and VaLores Kaufman of Newman Grove.

Tymber has the opportunity to be judged at the district and state competitions with this essay:

An American is a fan of burgers and hot dogs, chocolate and ice cream. An American loves football and baseball, puppies and entertainment. An American is a soldier like my Dad who is working for the President overseas.

Americans are the soldiers’ families, waiting for them to come home. Americans are loving, helpful, caring people. They are peaceful men and women who have earned the right to be free. An American respects the flag, which stands for the country our soldiers took the time to keep free.

They could be doctors, lawyers, or even truck drivers. Americans are also elders teaching the youth, as well as the youth teaching the elders. An American is a revolutionary seamstress or a modern day quilt maker. They are readers, writers, singers, and people who have hobbies and just enjoy what they are doing.

An American pledges loyalty to our great leaders who run and keep this country free from those working against it. Americans work hard to resolve things that they dislike or think is unfair.

An American is a thinker! Where would we be if Thomas Edison hadn’t thought again to try to create light? Not only are the people of America inventive, but they are also learners.

Everyday you can learn something new. Whatever the age or occupation, we are all Americans. We share the greatest country in the world
