Damp, cloudy conditions could not deter the Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs from finishing their season on a bright note. Coming into the State Meet ranked second, the boys lived up to their reputation by capturing the Championship crown in Class D boys.
Kevin Weeder led the charge, winning a gold medal with a time of 17.21. Kyle Wegener narrowly missed medaling, placing 17th, followed by Rob Plugge 24th, Kelan Schumacher 31st, Jerett Sueper 59th, and Shawn Korth 73rd out of 121 runners.
Holy Family easily outscored second place Chase County 49 to 81 points. “I am so proud of these guys. Kevin ran so relaxed; Kyle, Rob and Kelan really came on strong at the end of the race. Jerett picked off quite a few guys and Shawn gave it all he had. They set their goal at the beginning of the season and I’m so happy for them to have achieved it” stated Coach Weeder.
The Holy Family girls ran lights out to come in second to perennial power, three times State Champions Crofton.

“The girls I thought did really well. On paper, it looked like Crofton and Ainsworth were the teams to beat so runner-up is awesome. I had a feeling the girls could do it.” said Coach Weeder. Crofton scored 30, followed by LHF at 62. Andrea Weeder also captured the gold medal with a time of 15.33. Breanna Korus placed 5th, April Ramaekers 50th, Melanie Fehringer 66th, Lacey McPhillips 68th, and Stacy Beller 79th out of 123 runners. “None of the girls have ever run on this course, except for April, so I felt they did fantastic. Breanna knocked off some past state medalist and ran the race of her life. April, Melanie, Lacey and Stacy ran as a pack and really pushed through to run a gusty race. It was a lot colder than we anticipated.” said Coach Weeder.
“Katie OBrien, Tommy Thompson and Ross Sueper really helped the team throughout the season. They couldn’t run at state, but were a great support for us. This is like a dream come true for me, district champions for boys and girls, State Champion for the boys, and runner-up for the girls, and two gold medalists. We have been so blessed.”
