AWANA Camp-Out 2008

Pam King

Friday, August 1, the AWANA group held a camp out for the communties children. Pictured are some of the participants having a blast on the water slide that was prepared for them.

It was here and now it’s gone, but while it lasted it was fun! Another Awana Camp- Out has come and gone, and all that remains are the memories. Awana is all about ministering to children, and those who attended this year’s Camp-Out have lasting memories of an action-packed evening spent playing and learning some important truths from God’s Word.

Excitement built during the day as the Fellowship Bible Church property on the east end of town was transformed in preparation for the campers. Several tents suddenly popped up among the pine trees and a water slide appeared on the south grassy slope. Everyone watching then realized they were in for a great time.

The evening’s activities kicked off with a meal of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers served to the campers and their families. Then came the moment everyone was waiting for: The Wet, Wild and Wacky Games. This year’s games included Sloppy Baseball, Hatch a Water Balloon and Sumo Wrestling. Back by popular demand was the water slide constructed of large plastic tarps slickened with water and dish soap which made for very fast sliding.

Finally, it was time to dry off, change clothes and head into the sanctuary for the feature event. Sharon Lee led the group in some fun and lively choruses. A skit called, “Faces R Us” was presented by Betty King, Kelsey Lee, Pam King, Kathy Strong, Stephanie Rudloff, Aubrey Strong and Ashley King. The special guest speaker for the evening was Matt Rudloff who talked to the campers about the importance of trusting Jesus as their Savior. Mr. Rudloff is a Newman Grove native who recently returned home to serve as Guidance Counselor and coach at Newman Grove Public Schools.

As the sun set in the west, the campers headed outside once again for a flashlight hike and S’Mores around the campfire. The younger children then headed to their tents for devotions and sleep, but more fun was in store for the older group. They headed back inside for Awana games, devotions and a late-night video. At about 1:00 a.m., the last group of campers headed to their tents and sleeping bags and all was quiet for the rest of the night.

On Saturday morning, the campers were served a French toast and orange juice breakfast. Gradually, parents arrived to pick up their children and soon all were gone and the Camp-Out was over again for another year. Although this year’s Camp-Out is only a memory, the Awana Club will resume in September for more fun, games and learning from God’s Word.
