Bugs, anyone???

Kathy Strong

Attention!! Unwanted bugs available. Ever since our Summer Reading Program ended we seem to be overrun with little flying creatures. I have to think you boys were serious when you said you would leave your bugs here for me, however, I was serious when I said we didn’t want them. Someone really needs to tell those June bugs it is no longer June!!! As far as those mosquitoes go, they really think they know all the buzz, don’t they? But seriously, they know a good place to be and that is at the library. We had an excellent program turn out this year – on average 36 kids a week and 55 different kids all together! From the movie in May to the picnic in July, every one had a good time, and we learned a lot of different things about bugs. The most depressing for me was the fact that mosquitoes don’t freeze – I just figured they did – so I look forward to that first frost, but they don’t – so we decide it might as well stay warm, right???

The kids enjoyed out guest speakers, Mr. Mike Woldt from C.P.E. and his (little) beetles he shared. He gave a lot of good advice on how to keep the mosquito population down. Mr. Dewayne Voborny came with his van full of honey and lots of knowledge of bees. He allowed the kids to sample honey right from the comb and then they got to sample two kinds from the store, and his won, hands down, as tasting the best. Just like eating sugar and everyone agreed. His honey is made from clover. Thanks to little baby food jars each child got to take home their own sample. If anyone is interested in purchasing some honey I have his number here at the library. Mr. Vobory is from Neligh and owns Rainbow Valley Farms. We had a nice hot day for our picnic, the kids enjoyed games and a lunch. Everyone took home a bag with lots of goodies like a pencil, balloons, honey candy and a bug. We receive coupons from Subway, Mc- Donalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Runza, Pizza Hut and the Dairiette in Albion – all good places to eat, so the kids say. Thanks moms, dads and grandma’s for taking the time to bring your children. Thanks Tim for making those hot dogs and thank you Julie for taking pictures. I also would like to thank Andrea Jarecki, Katie King, Emily Strong and Aubrey Strong for all their help. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Starting on July 17th at 10:00am we will have a story time for any child interested. It will be a time for them to be read to and also an opportunity for them to read to an adult or a friend. This will give them a chance to fill in their reading charts. Just drop them off and head up town to get your groceries for the weekend.

I just want to take this time to thank the kids for their involvement and their enthusiasm, we enjoyed each and everyone and they were so patient on those days when things didn’t always go so smoothly. Don’t be a stranger for the rest of the summer, we would sure like to see you.

We have just received our new July Books and there are definitely some good ones available. Come in and get one then go relax at the pool awhile, you deserve it! You can check the listing on the web page at newmangrovelibrary.org and click on book list.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Sunday July 27 at 2:00 for the Charlotte Endorf Presentation on the Orphan Train. It’s a part of our history we should never forget and is definitely a lesson to learn on being grateful for what we have now.

One thing we learned this week is we don’t have to live by the computer all the time (my 15 year old would not agree). Awhile back I received a letter from Norway requesting addresses from various libraries in our area. I looked them up and sent them back to him by mail YES!!! By mail, can you imagine that? Tuesday we received a letter thanking us for the information and the help. It’s a great feeling to help others even when you have no idea who they are. That’s why we are here!
