Ann O’Brien receives Bestor Scholarship

Ann O’Brien, daughter of John and Doris O’Brien of Newman Grove, and a 2008 graduate of Newman Grove High School, has received the Daniel S. Bestor Scholarship.

This scholarship established in 1953 by Mr. Bestor is awarded to incoming freshmen in the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources at UNL.

Other scholarships received are: UNL James Canfield Scholarship, Bluejay Foundation, Clarence/Deloris Nelson Memorial Scholarship, Nebraska Academy of Sciences, Marion O. & Bertrand Schultz Scholarship, Cargill community Scholarship, Newman Grove Masonic Lodge #305 Scholarship, Brittany Julesen Scholarship.

During her high school years, Ann was involved in the Shell Creek Watershed Improvement Group, Volleyball, Basketball, Track, FBLA-2007- 2008 President, FCCLA 2006- 2007 Secretary/Treasurer, FFA 2006-2007 Treasurer & 2007- 2008 President, Catholic Youth Council 2007-2008 Prayer Leader, 4-H Treasurer 2003- 2008, School Musical, Speech, Drama, Student Council 2006- 2007 Secretary/Treasurer, National Honor Society 2007- 2008 President, Volleyball/ Basketball/Track Academic All State, National Honor Society Character Award, Outstanding Actress Award-District Play Competition, NECC Academic Contest-2nd place-American Government & 2nd place-Foods & Nutrition, Bluejay All Academic Team, Conference Quiz Bowl Team, American Citizenship Award, High Distinction/ Distinction Honor Roll, Presidents Education Award, Norfolk Elks Lodge “Teenager of the Month” (April), Honorable Mention All-Academic Team-Norfolk Daily News, Omaha World Herald 2008 All Academic Team, U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award.

Her career plans are to attend UNL and attain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry; then apply to either medical school to become a family practice physician or apply to Optometry School. “I would eventually like to return to a more rural area and practice in the health care field”, states Ann.
