Bluejays defeat Blujays to win opener

Bill Mimick

The Newman Grove Bluejay football team traveled to Walthill on Friday, August 27, 2010, beginning this year’s football campaign with a game against the Walthill Blujays. They had a nice field and good facilities.

The Newman Grove squad got on top early, then took advantage of Walthill fumbles and intercepted passes to build an early lead. Newman Grove started substituting in the latter part of the first quarter.

The Jays set a school 8-man record for points with a 79-6 victory.

A very good crowd of Newman Grove followers traveled to Walthill and backed the team well. Thanks.

18 individuals recorded defensive stats and 9 Jays scored points on offense behind good blocking at the line.

The first home game will be Friday, September 3, when Newman Grove hosts the Shelby Huskies at 7:00 pm. This will be the annual Parents Night contest.

Shelby’s record the past two seasons has been 19-3. The Huskies were pre-season rated 8th, 9th, and 10th in polls for class D-1. The team is led by nine seniors. The Huskies lost their opening game to Giltner (pre-season rated 6th and last year’s runner up to Howells in Class D-1). This should be an interesting contest and a real challenge for the Bluejays.

Box Score
  1 2 3 4 F
Walthill 0 0 0 6 6
Newman Grove 36 27 16 0 79
