Library summer fun finds a cool pool

Kathy Strong, Library Director

The 2010 Newman Grove Public Library Reading Program ended with a splash at the city pool on July 1st. We had a beautiful morning for the kids to go swimming and enjoy playing with their friends. Sue London, the pool manager, explained how they care for the pool and some of the rules that have to be followed for everyone’s safety.

The kids then took part in a penny dive and boat races. The boats had to be made by the children themselves. Some were pretty fancy and others very simple. The winners of the boat race were Dylan Bagley, Serenity Strong and Ellen Carlson.

After swimming for an hour or so the kids went over to the park for dinner; squid dogs, chips, juice and cupcakes were served. Prizes were awarded and everyone in attendance received something. Winners of the frog pillowcases were Mara Ranslem and Kyle Stone and the wonderful (NOT) singing fish went to William Dyer.

Besides other prizes everyone received a bag with toys and coupons to be used at Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, and MacDonald’s. Please thank these businesses for they continued support to the local libraries and our Reading Program. Also Burger King donated all the juice.

All and all, the program went well. We averaged about 32 kids a day and had 53 different kids attend. They all enjoy the pool, of course, thanks to the wonderful weather. But they also had a lot of questions for the Shell Creek Watershed group, and Aubrey did a great job answering them. And of course who doesn’t love an animal or two?

The kids all have reading charts they can work on over the summer, so encourage them to continue reading. We do have a few Omaha Royal baseball tickets still available if anyone would like to go. The date is August 8, 2010, at 6:00p.m. This will be one of the last games in Rosenblatt Stadium.

I want to take this time to thank Julie Bagley and Jessica Matson for all their help at the pool and with dinner at the park and Julie for taking some great pictures. I also want to thank Emily Strong and Celine Dunlap for volunteering their time to help all month long—we could not have done it without you girls—and to Karen and Aubrey who held the fort down everywhere else.

Those who attended were: Mara & Caden Ranslem, Trent & Kailey Patzel, Serenity Strong, Isaac Rudloff, Jackson Rexilius, Dylan Bagley, Hunter Steinbach, Jacob & Isaac Potmesil, Emmah Benson, Elyssa, Dominik & Kristian Cuevas, Rebecca & Kyle Stone, Courtney & Camille Fowlkes, Keaton, Aleeya & Kellen Morris, Abbie Pieke, Madison Friedrich, Leighann & David Miller, Evelyn Estruda, Payton & Paige Nelson, Brady Sokol, Breanna & Bethaney Borgheiinck, Abigail & Andrew Matson, William Dyer, Alexis Kopecky, Joab, Saul & Ellen Carlson, Conner Johnson, Sammy Mueller, Shayla Friedrich, Lucas & Levi Krueger, Tony Coleman, Aaron Potmesil, Cole Lyon, Chris & Ben Gottsch, Michelle Julsen, Logan Hodges andRebekah, Kala, Matthew & Leah Rast.
